Each spring, Builders Clubs around the world put the finishing touches on thier projects for the year, express their individual creativity, and reflect on a year of well done service to home, school and community when they ready thier entries for the Builders Club annual contests.
Plans are in the works to have both boys present their work at the KT District Convention in Kingsport in August. If your Kiwanis Club is near Columbia TN and would like the boys to present their work as well as what the EA Cox Builders Club does with projects such as the Maury County Animal Shelter, please contact Edith F. Bryant "Edye" at 859.576.1683 (Home) or 859.275.1955 (Work) or by email at: zitiedye@aol.com
With school testing going on during the spring, Builders International will be moving the contest deadline from April 1st to May 1st. While this will move from the popular spring break weeks in late March and early April, clubs should plan accordingly since mid and late April is testing time.
International is also developing a printed contest packet that will be mailed to all Builders Clubs in the fall. Contest information and entry forms are also available at www.buildersclub.org and on the Advisor Resource CD.

Builders Club is a coeducational service organization that provides young people in junior high and middle school the opportunity to help others, serve their school and community, and build a positive future for themselves.
These young students develop and carry out service projects for their school and community. They may also participate in fund-raising projects and use the money earned to support a local charity or school concern.
Builders Clubs elect their own officers, hold regular meetings,
and establish their own committees. Projects suggested by members
are
conducted under the supervision and cooperation of you, the faculty
advisor, school administrator, and sponsoring Kiwanis club.
Kiwanis International has dedicated itself to community service for 80 years. Schools have been a vital part of that interest, and much concern has been focused upon the development of youth and the direction of their energies into worthwhile activities.
In 1975, Kiwanis International expanded its family of youth programs to include Builders Club. Builders Club is the youngest member of the Kiwanis family, which also includes Key Club for high school students, and Circle K for college students.
Kiwanis International considers Builders Club an important service project. The support provided to these youth members by local Kiwanis members is a practical extension of the objectives of the international organization.
Currently, more than 1,500 Builders Clubs have been established, with an estimated membership of 50,000. Builders Clubs exist in the United States, Canada, Bahamas, and Jamaica.
The following Objects are stated in the Standard Form for Builders Club Bylaws:
To provide opportunities for working together in service
to school and community.
To develop leadership potential.
To foster development of strong moral character.
To encourage loyalty to school, community, and nation.
The motto of Builders Club, like that of Kiwanis International,
is:

The Walden School Builders Club recently was awarded a grant for $1,100 from the City of Louisville, Youth as Resources office, to support the ongoing work of the Builders Club intergenerational buddy program with Four Courts Senior Center. This is the 8th grant they received since 1999, totaling $9,395. In addition, the Walden School Builders Club was so large this year, that they divided the community service projects, so that 7th and 8th grades work with the elderly, while our 6th grade raised food for Kentucky Harvest.
Congratulations to the 6th Grade Walden School Builders Club and to the entire 6th Grade class for raising over 2,500 CANS for Kentucky Harvest! Thanks to their hard work and open hearts, CANtucky Harvest was a CANtastic Success. 2,500 CANS is 5,000 meals. And, the CANS collected by K-Kids and Key Club are still to be added in, so the tally on Walden School's generosity will be even higher!
Kentucky and USA Harvest founder, Stan Curtis was inspired by the 6th Grade's desire to help. During the Success Lunch, he told the students that it is important for kids to help other kids if we are to solve the city's and the world's hunger problem.
We now have three adults working with students:
Dora Sapoznik (6th grade) and Michael Troy Shell & Maris Elder (7 & 8 grades)

Gordon Lee Builders in Chickamauga made a presentation at their board of education meeting describing their many activities which included:
1. Collecting and sending more than 400 packages of school
supplies to North Wauchula Elementary School in Wauchula, Florida.
This school was hard hit by
Hurricane Charlie.
2. Collecting 35 gallons of drink can tabs. Each gallon pays
for 1 chemotherapy treatment. Collected 15 gallons the last nine
weeks of school
last year and the other 20 gallons were collected since school
started this year.
3. Conducted a September 11th Remembrance Ceremony. A video was also made of this ceremony.
4. They are about midway through our "Pills for Ills" collection. All money goes to the school nurse for medical supplies.
5. They elected our grade level representatives. Their committee chairpersons are also in place.
6. They currently have 105 paid members. About 1/3 of their total school enrollment belong to the Builders Club.
7. October will be their "Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF" month and they will also conduct a head start Halloween book project and party.

Kiwanis members and families came along with members from West Wilson Builders Club and the Mt. Juliet Middle School Builders Club joined in the activities. They reported that they all had a fun evening.

The next day several of the members took out best decorated pumpkins to Providence Place to share with the residents. Their activity director, Beverly, put a pumpkin on each of the dining room tables.
KINGSPORT, Tenn. A little candy during the holidays can brighten anyone's day, but sending a Candy-Gram this season can really brighten the life of a 10-year old Kingsport student and her family.
Ross N. Robinson Middle School's Builders Club is holding the school's first ever Candy-Gram sale. Funds from the sale will be donated to the family of 10-year old Jefferson Elementary student Haley Vincent, who has been diagnosed with Auto Immune Hepatitis and is in need of a liver transplant.
Candy-grams, or small cards with a candy-cane attached, can be purchased for 50 cents per card at Robinson Middle School this week from Monday, December 8 until Friday, December 12. The cards can be purchased by anyone, but can only be sent to a Robinson Middle School faculty member or a Robinson Middle School student. The Candy-grams will be delivered on Tuesday, December 16th.
Jessica Mullins, a teacher at Robinson Middle School and sponsor of the Builder's Club, said the idea for the Candy-Gram was initiated as a service project for the club. Builder's Club is the middle school branch of Kingsport's Kiwanis Club and will perform several service projects this year under the direction of the Kiwanis Club.
A teacher suggested the funds be used to benefit Haley, Mullins said. Haley's brother, Nick Vincent, is a seventh grade student at Robinson Middle School. "The whole idea just arose from a conversation and has really been moving. Our club is really excited," said Mullins.
Each day this week, Robinson Middle School will be playing a song entitled "Dirty Rotten Liver Blues" which was written and recorded by Haley. The song is posted on Kingsport City School's website at www.k12k.com.
For more information on the Candy-gram sale, contact Robinson Middle School at (423) 378-2200. For more information on Haley Vincent and her family's struggle with auto-immune hepatitis, visit Haley's website at: www.caringbridge.org/ga/haley/.

Clubs wishing to charter a new Circle K, Key Club, Builders, AKTion or KKids before Oct 1, has the option to charter with just member dues and to purchase the supporting materials ( banner, bell, gavel, pins, handbooks, etc) a la carte.
For the Charter year, there is no limit as to the number of members a club may have--in other words, for the charter fee the whole school can be members of the club the first year. Dues may be collected on the local level to start the club's treasury.
The paperwork for the Petition to Charter for all clubs will be changing slightly--mostly in the check off section to be sure the sponsorship fee is included with the Petition.
If you have any questions, please contact the chartered youth administrator
Please note--the $150 KKids fee is an yearly fee. After the charter year, the other clubs just pay the regular International and approprate District and Club dues.
