Biography on Governor Ken Clawson

Dr. Kenneth Clawson was recently elected Governor of the Kentucky Tennessee District of Kiwanis International and will serve from October 1, 2001 through September 30, 2002. He has been a member of Kiwanis for over 36 years, 33 as a member of the Richmond Kiwanis Club. He has been an active member of the Richmond Club having chaired many committees and served as vice president and president of the club. He has sponsored more new members in the club than any other member.

Dr. Clawson has been Kiwanis Lt. Governor of Division 9 of the K-T District. At the District level he has been a Certified Trainer for Kiwanis Leadership Training for many years and was one of the original trainers in the District. He is also a Certified Trainer for the Lt. Governors. He has served on District committees and led workshops at the District Conventions. He attends the Kiwanis International Conventions and recently returned from attending the International Convention meeting in Taipei, Tiawan.

Dr. Clawson is a Professor Emeritus of Education at Eastern Kentucky University after having served in several positions; including positions as a university-wide dean, other administrative positions and as Professor of Education for the past 33 years. He continues to work part-time with the Kentucky Beginning Teacher Intern Program in the College of Education.

He has led in developing a number of academic programs, was the first Dean of Special Programs, has directed the university-wide SACS self-study for accreditation, served on and chaired numerous university committees, and worked with professional advisory committees. He has been professionally active in Kentucky, regionally, and nationally--often leading sessions and sharing his work and research. He has served as President of the Kentucky Association of Community and Junior Colleges, President of the Midwest Association of Teachers of Educational Psychology, Board Member of the Mid-South Education Research Association, to name a few. He has BS and MA degrees from Appalachian State University, Boone, NC and a PhD from Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL.

For many year Dr. Clawson was active in health planning in Kentucky. He served as an original board member of the East Kentucky Health Systems Agency (serving the eastern half of the state) where he was named the first Chair of the Project Review Committee. During the Julian Carroll administration, he was appointed to the state Health Planning Body where he was appointed Chair of the Project Review Committee, which reviewed and made recommendations for Certificates-of-Need for all new and proposed health services for the state of Kentucky. He also served as a member of several organizations seeking to attract and retain qualified health professionals for eastern Kentucky.

Dr. Clawson currently serves as a Board Member of the Kentucky Baptist Homes for Children. Locally, he has been active in the Richmond community for many years and currently serves as a board member and secretary of the St. Andrews Retirement Community, representing the First Baptist Church. He is a member of the Richmond Area Arts Council and has served as an member of the advisory committee for the MARC Center with facilities in Richmond and Berea. He has chaired the Kit Carson District of the Boy Scouts of America. He is an active and dedicated member of First Baptist Church where he is a Deacon. He has served as Sunday School Director, Brotherhood Director,Sunday School Teacher, and is currently a member of the Architect Selection and Building Committee.

Dr. Clawson and his wife Bobbie have resided in Richmond for 33 years where she has also been active in the church and community. They are the proud parents of two children, Eileen Clawson and Ted (Pam) Clawson and two grandsons Matthew 7 and Alex 3. They are looking forward to their Kiwanis responsibilities, traveling througout Kentucky and Tennessee, visiting the 19 Divisions, promoting community service through Kiwanis Clubs who serve the children of the world, and making new acquaintances and friends.
